Appreciative Inquiry or AI is positive about people and is action-oriented. It leads people through a series of constructive conversations building on the best of what is and engaging people's imagination and enthusiasm to make a difference concerning what needs to be done next. As such it is a blend of participatory action research, strategic review, team capacity-building and organisational learning.
There are numerous exciting applications in educational settings: positive approaches to school improvement planing and self-evaluation, stakeholder engagement with governors, parents and community, more productive staff meetings, special educational needs and inclusion, Every Child Matters inter-agency collaboration, one-to-one coaching etc
Who Is It For?
Anyone interested in how to think and act positively and constructively, especially those working in challenging contexts where there appear to be never ending needs to be met or where morale is low because of a deficit culture affecting the mindset of the team or organisation. AI is also an excellent method of community engagement which gets all stakeholders including service-users round the same table to think creatively together. AI can be used variously for 1:1 form of Coaching, team-development and organisation-wide strategy, neighbourhood renewal and city/region-wide initiatives.
